ABOUT BUDBREAK
We are a small cut-flower farm in the Finger Lakes focusing on sustainably growing beautiful cut flowers for local florists, farmers markets, weddings and event floristry. We are based in Canandaigua, NY and serve the greater Rochester and Finger Lakes regions.
Our Story
Budbreak is a passion project coming from owner, Paige Vinson. With her home roots in the Finger Lakes region Paige has long had a love for Finger Lakes agriculture. With this leap into flower farming on her 5-acre home, she provides locally-grown flowers for her regional CSA, local events and farmer’s markets throughout the growing season.
Budbreak Flower Company takes its name from Paige’s background in winemaking—budbreak is the stage in a grapevine’s life when the first new growth of the season begins. It is the brief moment when a once-dormant vine springs into action for a new season.
A time of promise, cautious optimism, anticipation.
At Budbreak, we try to live in this moment throughout the entire season. We work to embrace the beauty in every new bloom and bring it to you so that you, too, can pause and enjoy the beauty of the season.
Our Philosophy
SUSTAINABILITY
We do not use pesticides on our farm. It is harder, but we do our best to leave the ground better than we found it. We have an extensive on-site compost project that incorporates vermiculture (worms!) and we focus on building healthy soil that promotes a good balance of nutrients and beneficial insects. This means that we weed by hand, scout for pest damage, and utilize a lot of hand work to ensure beautiful blooms AND pollinators thrive.
GROWN NOT FLOWN
It is a little known FACT that the cut-flower industry has an intense, large carbon foot print. Most grocery store flowers and traditional florists work with flowers that are grown overseas, ‘ripened’ artificially and treated with chemicals to maximize vase life. In the same way we are encouraged to eat the local produce that is in season, we at Budbreak want to celebrate the flowers that are at their current peak in our beautiful region.
COMMUNITY
The team here at Budbreak is small, and because of that and our love of the Finger Lakes we cherish our community of supporters. We work with other local flower farms to supplement our own flowers, showcase our blooms at small businesses we know and love (and know you will too!) and do what we can to always find a local option for our farm needs. We believe the Finger Lakes thrives as a region with the shared support of our vibrant, local businesses.
